48 hours after a local anesthesia for a knee surgery the feeling hasn't returned in the leg. Very worried!

January 30th, 2009 by admin

My husband had a knee replacement surgery and beside the spinal injection he had been given a local anesthesia in the groin. Although he can move his toes he cannot feel his leg. Anybody with an opinion? Thank you very much.

That's a femoral nerve block that he had, and it was done for post-op pain relief. I don't know what drug was injected, so I can't tell you if there's a problem or not.

Contact the anesthesia department and ask them to see him. They can give you a better idea of whether or not there is cause for concern.

At home exercises to do after knee surgery?

January 30th, 2009 by admin

I had surgery to remove a tumor in the back of my knee/leg a week ago. I am in a knee immoboilizer for 3 weeks. Are there exercises I can do to help strengthen my leg/knee while i'm on bed rest for 3 wks?

Hello, I am a therapist. It sounds like he doesn't want you to move it for 3 weeks. Hence the knee immobilizer and bed rest. In 3 weeks he should refer you to a physical therapist to start exercises. In the meantime, I would not do anything unless your doctor has stated otherwise. You do not want to harm your knee. He said that for a reason. He must have had to go deep and it needs to heal from the inside out. Be safe, not sorry. I pray for your quick recovery.

when will i be able to move or bend my knee? i just recently took off my cast from arthroscopic knee surgery?

January 28th, 2009 by admin

i was in a cast for 24 days after my arthroscopic knee surgery and its been a day, and i can barely move it an inch. it feels very tight on the knee and extremely weak. is it normal?what can i do to help. is time the key factor for me?? any help or input appreciated.

That's a long time for the joint to be immobile. You'll have lost a LOT of muscle to atrophy. It's unlikely that they'd have taken the cast off if you weren't supposed to be trying to move it. It's just going to take time. Go slow, bending it a little bit more each day. Depending on what exactly they were doing through the scope, you may have scar tissue built up that has to be loosened up. It would probably be a good idea for you to work with a physical therapist to try to get your flexibility and strength back. It's going to be a long, difficult, and likely painful process.

How long to recovery after knee surgery?

January 26th, 2009 by admin

I had knee surgery 3 weeks ago. I had the cartilidge and bone scraped out. I'm 18 and have been told I'll recovery fatser than older people. Does anyone know when I'll be able to walk? I'm currently going to physical therapy, will that help me recover faster?

You'll probably ditch the crutches within a week. You'll get most of your motion back by 4 weeks. You might be done with PT at this point…maybe longer…Intermittent mild pain and swelling may last around 6 months. Yet, everyone is different. For the most part, you'll be doing most of your normal activities by 8 weeks….perhaps except for running. Therapy will be beneficial for you to learn what exercises you can do to regain your strength and mobility faster (than doing nothing).

What are the risks of knee surgery?

January 26th, 2009 by admin

My friend has a torn acl, and a lot more stuff messed up in his knee…and he’s getting surgery today. What are the potential risks?

These are the things that one has to look out for. The first thing is if there is any meniscal damage. The latest papers out on these procedures is that doing repair of a meniscus if it is not causing locking it should be left alone. The reason for this is taking pieces of meniscus out allows the underlying cartilege to erode and create an early degenerative process leading to a total knee replacement. As for the anterior cruciate ligament it should be repaired for not repairing it causes more wear and tear on the meniscus again leading to a total knee replacement. There are always the possibility of surgical complications and infections. Just follow the doctor’s instructions and all should be okay. The procedure that he is having done is usually out-patient and that is good. The less time that is spent in a hospital the better. The super organisms that are around are usually found in hospitals. Make sure that he goes to therapy and keeps up his exercises after the therapy is done. If he is over weight make sure that he comes down in weight. The less weight that is carried the easier it is on the knee as well as the entire body. If he can avoid runnig and jumping exercises as that is what is going to cause more stress to the knee even with all of the proper exercises.
